Do you eat well and exercise, but still seem to have excess fat under your chin? Also known as submental fullness, this fat can be due to weight gain, genetics, or aging. Sometimes, no matter how much you diet, the condition will not go away. Thankfully, there is a non-surgical solution called Kybella® that can eliminate these fat cells for good!
What is Kybella® and How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that eliminates fat cells under the chin for an improved profile. The active ingredient in this injectable treatment is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a man-made version of the naturally occurring molecule in the body, which aids in the breakdown of dietary fat. When Kybella® is injected into the fat below the chin, it destroys fat cells, which can no longer return.
The FDA-approved injectable drug is designed to target and reduce fat beneath the chin, commonly known as a double chin. It is ideal for patients who accumulate fat in the submental area and want to avoid surgical procedures, as Kybella works by breaking down and absorbing fat cells in the treated area. Most patients require multiple treatments spaced weeks apart to achieve optimal fat reduction and tissue tightening, especially if they have a significant amount of fat or a history of storing fat in this area.
The Kybella® Treatment
Before your Kybella® treatment, your provider will examine the area under your chin to determine if this treatment is right for you. If so, a personalized treatment plan will be created to help make your aesthetic goals a reality.
To begin, the area under your chin will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream applied to ensure you are comfortable during treatment. Then, your provider will mark small dots on the treatment area to map out where the injections will take place. Multiple injections will be needed, which take about 15-20 minutes to complete.
Who is a Candidate for Kybella Injections?
Adults 18 years and older who are unhappy or embarrassed by fat under their chin and do not wish to undergo surgery can often benefit from Kybella®. However, you should not receive this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had or plan on having surgery on your face or neck, or have bleeding problems. Plastic surgeons and cosmetic providers often recommend Kybella for patients with mild to severe fat accumulation under the chin, as it provides a nonsurgical option with long-lasting results once the fat cells are destroyed. What to Expect During a Kybella Consultation
During your initial consultation, your healthcare provider will evaluate your chin profile, medical history, and body mass to determine if you’re a good candidate for Kybella injections. It is important to disclose any medical conditions and whether you take blood thinners, fish oil, or other blood thinning medications, as these may increase the risk of bruising or other side effects.
Downtime from Kybella Cosmetic Procedures
Following your Kybella® treatment, you may experience some common side effects include swelling, bruising, and numbness in the treated area. Keeping your head elevated and following post-treatment instructions can help reduce swelling after your first treatment.
Because everyone has different treatment goals, the number of treatment sessions needed will vary from patient to patient. Each session should be given at least one month apart, and you should not undergo more than six treatments.
