Common Myths About Lipedema

Sometimes, the body produces fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. This condition is known as lipedema and can affect your emotional well-being as well as your physical health. Unfortunately, there are plenty of myths about lipedema, so let’s look at a few of them and discuss the actual truth about this condition.

What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a common condition where fat builds up on both sides of the lower body in an abnormal way. It typically occurs in the legs or buttocks, but it can be found in the arms as well. And because the fat isn’t like normal fat cells, it doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. The condition is also much more common in women. It’s typically rare in men.

Myth: Lipedema is simply regular fat.

The fat from lipedema is not like normal fat that can be burned off with diet or exercise. It’s also much bumpier and can leave you with lots of visible lumps and bumps.

Myth: lipedema affects obese women only.

While the exact cause of lipedema is unknown, your weight has nothing to do with it. Those who are thin can have lipedema just as much as those who aren’t.  Unfortunately, because there is the myth that lipedema is only a problem for obese women or those who are overweight, it can be difficult for some to receive appropriate treatment. The condition also tends to run in families and seems to have a connection to hormones. It often comes on during puberty, menopause, and pregnancy.

Myth: Lipedema is only an aesthetic problem.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Lipedema is a medical disorder and can cause tremendous physical as well as emotional pain. Excess fat accumulation in the legs usually translates to pain, swelling, and discomfort when walking. It can also cause many to feel self-conscious about their bodies, which can affect their emotional well-being. It can also lead to venous disease, joint issues, and flat feet.

Myth: Lipedema does not have a cure.

While it is true that there is currently no known cure for lipedema, there are many ways to control it so you can live a healthy and full life. At First State MedSpa, we provide a number of lipedema treatments, including compression therapy, lymphatic drainage massage, lymph-sparing liposuction, and pneumatic compression pump therapy. These treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve the appearance of the affected areas.

Myth: Lipedema will go away without any treatment.

Unfortunately, lipedema will not simply disappear if it’s left untreated. It can actually worsen and turn into lymphedema, a condition that occurs when there is a blockage in your lymphatic pathway that allows fluid to build up. Lipedema can also bring on complications like mobility issues, pain, joint problems, and even depression when it’s not treated properly.

Early Detection and Treatment

Lipedema patients are often misdiagnosed or don’t get a diagnosis for years. As a result, their symptoms can become aggravated, and complications can occur. If you believe you have lipedema, schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. You don’t have to simply live with this condition.
