How to Prep for Your Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is an almost painless procedure that promotes the production of elastin and collagen within the skin. By increasing the amount of elastin and collagen in the skin, you can achieve a more youthful, healthy, and natural complexion.

Dr. Shapira and the staff at First State MedSpa are ready to answer any questions or concerns about your skin and the microneedling procedure. Our trained technicians will then use handheld devices for “pricking” the skin. These controlled injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing process.

But how do you prepare for the procedure? Let’s take a look at a few ways to prepare for this innovative treatment.

6 Steps: Preparing for Microneedling

Knowing what to expect before, during, and after microneedling can be the first step in preparing for treatment. Being informed about the procedure and the steps you’ll want to take to prepare can ensure you achieve the best results.

1. Consultation

Before your first procedure, you will have a consultation where a member of our staff will discuss the advantages of microneedling for your specific skin type. We will also answer any questions you have and address all your concerns. If there are pre-existing skin conditions, they may need treatment before microneedling.

2. Sunlight

Avoiding direct sunlight, including tanning beds, for 24 hours before microneedling treatment is important. Avoiding direct sun exposure will minimize discomfort and help with the healing process during and after your microneedling treatments.

3. Skincare Products and Medications

You’ll receive the best outcomes from microneedling when your skin is clean and free of any skincare products. Products with acid-based retinoids are of particular concern. Retinoids include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and azelaic acid-containing products. Acidic skin products can cause overly dry skin, leading to irritation during and after treatment.

Blood thinning medications can also be an issue as they affect the ability of blood to clot. During the procedure, microneedling makes minute piercings. Pausing blood thinners allows you to avoid unnecessary bleeding. We will advise you on when to stop and continue these medications.

5. Procedure Day

On the day of microneedling treatment, don’t use makeup, lotions, perfumes, or skincare products. Wash your face with gentle soap and then rinse well. Ideally, you will also shower before the appointment to ensure a clean face free of any latent skincare products that may interfere with treatment.

6. What to Expect From Microneedling

Microneedling can lessen fine lines, blemishes, larger pores, and other complexion issues. It can even reduce stretch marks. Based on the results you’re looking for, you may need repeated treatments. Afterward, you will likely have a little discomfort.

6. After Your Procedure

After microneedling, stay away from makeup and certain skincare products until your skin has fully healed. Natural moisturizers may be used, but ask our staff for their recommendations. When washing your face after the treatment, use warm water and gentle soap, and avoid scrubbing.
