What to Expect After Botox Treatment

Botox injections continue to be a popular choice for those looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. But to receive the amazing results you’re looking for, aftercare is just as important as the injections themselves. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what to do after you receive injections.

Aftercare for Optimal Botox Results

Some of the aftercare tips you’ll want to follow after your Botox injections include:

Swelling Management

You may notice some temporary swelling after receiving Botox injections, and while a cold compress can be used to alleviate any discomfort, applying ice to the injection site is not recommended. You can also keep your head elevated to minimize swelling and bruising.

Facial Exercises

About an hour after your Botox injections, you can start doing some gentle facial exercises. This can include smiling, frowning, and moving your facial muscles. These facial movements will help the effectiveness of the formula. Just make sure you aren’t putting any pressure on the injection sites.

Limit Physical Activity

We suggest avoiding vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours after injections to prevent the formula from migrating to other areas of the face. Increased blood flow from exercising can also increase bruising and swelling.

Avoid Makeup

Avoid applying makeup for the rest of the day after your Botox injections. Bacteria from brushes and the makeup itself could become caught in the wounds at the injection site and lead to an infection. You may resume your normal makeup routine the next day.

Positioning Post-Procedure

During the first four hours, refrain from lying down or bending forward. We want the Botox to remain in the treatment area so it can have the greatest effect.

Sleep Smart

During the first night, you should sleep on your back to avoid pressure on the injection sites. This will ensure the Botox doesn’t migrate and will help ease swelling and bruising.

Avoid Alcohol

Since Botox can cause bruising and irritation at the injection site, alcohol should be avoided for 48 hours before and after your Botox treatment. As alcohol is a blood thinner, it could cause excess bleeding during injections and bruising.

Postpone Other Skin Procedures

You’ll want to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after Botox injections before having any other skin treatments done. This includes treatments like facials, microneedling, and laser therapy.

Sunlight and Heat Exposure

Stay out of the sun and avoid heat (including hot baths or saunas) for a day or two post-treatment to reduce unnecessary facial swelling or the migration of the formula.
