Xeomin & Dysport

When you look in the mirror, are you starting to notice fine lines across your forehead, between your brows, or at the corners of your eyes? These are common facial lines, including upper facial lines, that many people seek to address. If so, it may be time to consider a neuromodulator injectable, such as Xeomin or Dysport, which are types of botulinum toxin products. At First State MedSpa, we offer a selection of treatment options to meet your individual needs and aesthetic goals.

What are Xeomin® & Dysport® Botulinum Toxin Treatments?

There are a number of different injectable treatments available on the market today. One of the most common types of injectables includes neuromodulators such as Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Botox. These products all contain botulinum toxin type A, which works to smooth dynamic wrinkles, or the wrinkles that form as a result of repeated facial movements, by reducing muscle activity and blocking muscle contractions.

So, what is the main difference between these injectable products? The main distinction lies in their formulation. This will influence how the product spreads, the dosage used, and how quickly results can be seen. It is important to know exactly which product is being used, as each botulinum toxin product may have different properties, safety profiles, and considerations.

Before starting treatment with Xeomin, Dysport, or any other botulinum toxin product, patients should inform their provider about any medical conditions and any new medicines they are taking.

What Areas Can Xeomin and Dysport Treat?

The most common neuromodulator treatment areas include:

  • Glabellar lines, also called frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines and creases
  • Corners of the mouth
  • A “cobblestoned” appearance on the chin

The number of units used and the specific treatment plan will depend on the area being treated and the patient’s desired results.

In addition to cosmetic uses, Xeomin is also FDA-approved for the treatment of certain medical conditions, such as cervical dystonia, which involves abnormal muscle contractions in the neck.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment is fairly quick and straightforward. Prior to injection, the treatment site will be cleansed, and a topical numbing cream may be applied if desired. The neuromodulator of your choice will then be skillfully injected into the planned injection site(s) using a thin syringe. Treatment typically takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

Recovery and Results

You will be able to return to your regular activities directly after treatment. We do recommend that you avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Mild swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection site are normal and should dissipate with time.

Compared to Dysport results, which typically appear within 2-3 days and last about 3-4 months, Xeomin results usually become noticeable within 3-4 days and can last up to 3-4 months as well.

Who is a Candidate for Xeomin or Dysport?

Candidates for Dysport and Xeomin are typically healthy adults seeking to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar frown lines, or the vertical lines between the eyebrows that appear when frowning. Ideal candidates should not have a history of allergic reactions to botulinum toxin products or ingredients in the formulations, including those with a known allergy to cow’s milk protein (particularly relevant for Dysport).

It’s important to tell your doctor if you have any history of breathing problems, neuromuscular conditions, or a skin infection at the planned injection site, as these factors may affect your safety or results. Individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of severe allergic reactions may not be suitable for Dysport injections or Xeomin. Always consult with a qualified provider to determine which option is safest and most effective for your goals.

Side Effects and Interactions

While Dysport and Xeomin are FDA-approved and widely used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, it’s important to be aware of their possible side effects and interactions with other medicines. The most common side effects reported by actual patients include mild injection site pain, redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Some individuals may also experience dry mouth, headache, or drooping eyelids after treatment.

Although these side effects are generally temporary and resolve on their own, botulinum toxin products can occasionally cause more significant reactions. Rarely, patients may develop muscle weakness, blurred vision, or swallowing problems.

If you notice any unusual symptoms after your treatment, especially severe side effects like trouble breathing, blurred vision, or significant muscle weakness, seek medical help immediately. Open communication with your healthcare provider and a thorough review of your medical history can help ensure your treatment is both safe and effective.
